History

The subway of Boston is oldest of the the United States. It was little open of time before the subway of Chicago in 1897. It was then about an underground tram line circulating in the center town. It is the green line, which is always exploited.

In 1901 was inaugurated the current orange line between Sullivan Square and Dudley Street which circulated on a viaduct ( Main Line Elevated ), then in 1904 the blue line between Maveric and the wearing of Boston. In 1912, a first section of the red line entered in exploitation. Since the lines knew prolongations throughout the 20th century.

Material

The park subway is composed of 410 cars belonging to several different series (2006). The park tram is composed of 187 cars belonging to several different series (2006). The material of the blue line has the effect of using two different power supplies: a catenary line in the sections of surface, and a third rail in the underground section located between the airport and the final loop of Bowdoin; the very restricted gauge of the tunnel does not allow the clearance of the pantograph, which is lowered before the entry in the tunnel.

Exploitation

The subway of Boston circulates of 5:00 to 0:45. It passes an oar all the three to four minutes to the rush hours and an oar all the five to ten minutes to the off-peak hours. The travellers can cross the ways between the oars for the correspondence in the principal station (association tram-subway).

Work and Projects

It is planned to prolong this line towards North along a way of railroad closed down between Wonderland and Lynn. It is also planned to create a section between Bowdoin and the station of Charles to ensure a correspondence with the red line.

There exists a serious project, to prolong the green line of Lechmere, since its current northern terminus until West Medford while passing by Somerville and the Université of Tufts along a railway line.
