Subway of Algiers

The subway of Algiers is a project which dates from the years 1970 designed to avoid the demographic explosion and with the collective transport need which results from it. Launched in the years 1980 it was slowed down because of financial problems and of the insecurity in the years 1990. The project was started again in 2003.

The first phase of the line 1 “Haï el Badr” - “Tafourah-Large post office”, 9 km, 10 stations, currently in construction, will be put service in 2009.

History of the project

  • Imagined in the years 1970, the project of the Métro of Algiers envisaged a network of 64 km.

Work was officially inaugurated in 1982, the technical studies completed in 1985, a German company and a Japanese woman are retained for the realization, but the fall of the price of the barrel of Pétrole, by 30$ until half of this sum the following years, reduced considerably the financial resources of the country. The project was on the way to be integrated into the shoed projects, but finally it was decided to return to the project of initial subway.

It will have to be waited three years so that soint started its realization in 1988. The contract awarded at two national companies COSIDER and, which were not tested on the matter, will very quickly be slowed down by the financial crisis and policy. Only four stations will be carried out in 15 years.

The Sous-sol of Algiers appears difficult to dig, which is added to a irregular Topographie. Work did not advance any more but with the idle.

  • In 1994, a first section which goes from the place Emir-Abdelkader to the Large-Station, 450 meters length, is completed. Another section of 650 meters, which connects the station Large-Station to Khélifa-Boukhalfa is him also completed.

  • 1999, the Company of the Subway of Algiers (EMMA), lance an opinion of international Invitation to tender and two groupings are chosen, French Systra-Sgte for the control of work and algéro-German GAAMA for the realization and completion within a 38 months of excavation work and civil engineering.

  • In 2003 benefitting from the return of the economic equilibrium, the government decides to equip the project with financial means adequate and new organisational and operational structures.

  • In January 2006, the Company of the Subway of Algiers (EMMA) entrusted the realization of the " system intégral" (key-in-hand) with the grouping made up of the French companies Siemens Transportation Systems for the installation of the fixed material, indication and the electrification, Vinci Construction Great projects for civil engineering, as of the Spanish company Construcciones there auxiliar of ferrocarriles (CIF) for rolling stock (14 trains of 6 cars). The grouping will use technology " Trainguard MT CBTC " already implemented on the line 1 and 14 of the Parisian subway.

Building sites in progress

Of a length of 9 km, the first phase of line 1 includes/understands 10 stations, connecting Haï el Badr (Bourouba) to Tafourah- Grande Post office (Algiers-Center).

  • the section El Hamma - Haï El Badr , with its 4 stations and 17 other works for ventilation and the cables is carried out within 38 assigned month. Work of Civil engineering concerning the Drilling and poses it rails were officially completed the June 30th 2007.
  • the installation and the welding of the ways a 23 km length (until the deposits) were started in April 2007 by the French company South-western Travaux France (TSO), the building site must be delivered in November 2007.

  • the first car must arrive at Algiers before December 2007.

Extensions

In the opinion of invitation to tender was launched for the realization of a section of 4 km between Bachdjarrah and El Harrach composed of 4 stations and a Viaduc of 250 meters above the strap Autoroute Ouchaïah Wadi.

  • the Gaama group which carried out the first section made an offer of 250 million euros including/understanding the realization of a multimode station (drunk subway/train//taxis) on the level of the railway station of El Harrach.

Two other extensions of line 1 are envisaged to the horizon 2010:

  • of " Tafourah" towards " place of Martyrs"
  • of Haï El Badr" towards " Ain Naâdja"

Further, two other lines are envisaged:

  • of " Large the poste" towards " Bordj El-Kiffane"
  • of " Hussein Dey" towards " Dely Brahim"
  • extension of Line 1 of " Place of Martyrs" towards " Dely Brahim"

Cost of the project

The total costs of the first phase of line 1 would rise to 77 billion DA, including 30 billion for civil engineering and 47 billion for the equipment, is nearly 900 million euros.

Inauguration

  • It is envisaged the delivery 14 trains of 6 cars each one. Each oar a 108 meters length can transport to 1.216 people including 208 sitted places.

  • the subway of Algiers will allow the displacement of 41.000 travellers/hour, that is to say 150 million voyageurs/an with intervals of exploitation going until less than 2 minutes. Of a speed of 70 km/h, the subway will be open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

  • a first startup is announced for end 2008, but actually it will be it probably only in 2009. The exploitation of the subway will be entrusted to a tested company, in the form of a mandate of management: the RATP was declared assignee of the market in August 2007.
