Suburi

Definition of the suburi

The suburi is a exercise of drive practiced in martial arts such as the Kendo or the Aïkido. It allows a technical work (synchronization of the movement arm/leg) as well as the increase in the flexibility of the back and the shoulder.

The ideal is to practice it with a suburibokken (which is a heavier bokken) in order to make work the flexibility and the muscles.

Practical

  • the practitioner must seek the fluidity of the movement. The chopped and jerked movements are to be proscribed
  • the flexibility is acquired only with very full movements.
  • the catch of the Bokken must be neither too hard nor too soft. The Sensei S are accustomed to employing the analogy with the behavior of a bird: too much strongly one kills it, too slightly it flies away.
  • tiredness will quickly appear only if the practitioner is contracted too much.
  • the speed and the power are not the principal criteria: the practice aims at working the precision, control, the exact form and a harmonious rate/rhythm.
