Substantive

A substantive is a lexeme (generally a word) which indicates a thing or a concept by itself. In other words, it is a word which holds a function of Nom in a sentence.
The substantive term has a significance broader than that of name , because a substantive can be a word of another grammatical Catégorie (Adjectif, Verbe, Article or other) which are used in a sentence as a name
For example:
- These two there! ( two being determining)
- Marcher makes good ( to go being a verb)
- the poor ! (poor being an adjective)
- the supper …
- the to speak about oil
- a European , with a Capital in this case, because it is a Gentilé (inhabitant of the Europe).
Grammar
The substantive can be declined in kind and of number. For example: three giraffes ; or: the speeches provençaux . To speak is then a plural male substantive.
