Kunheim is a common French, located in the department of the Haut-Rhin and the area Alsace.

Geography

History

  • Common favoured neither by the geography nor by the history as a long time as the the Rhine was a border, she knew a great change after the realization of the Grand channel of Alsace and the creation of the Rhenish industrial parks. The common one counts an evaluated population with 1633 inhabitants at the end of 2001.

  • Kunheim is mentioned for the first time at the 13th century in a chronicle of Ebersmunster and is quoted in a donation of 998.

  • In 1766, the village was moved of approximately a km to move away it from the floods of the Rhine (32 families, is approximately 200 inhabitants). The inter-commune co-operation existed already since the common neighbors were to take part in this operation with men and carts.

  • In 1939, most of the population was taken refuge with Casteljaloux, in the Lot-et-Garonne. This event became the topic of twinning between Kunheim and Casteljaloux, officialized 60 years later in June 1999.

  • on June 16th, 1940, the village was very touched by the German artillery shootings.

  • on February 2nd, 1945, release of the village which is touched once again by the German artillery shootings.

The village was moved in 1766 because initially too close to the Rhine and regularly flooded; one still finds in the place of the old church a cross and some stones allowing to locate the village.
