Subimago
The Subimago is a Insecte at the stage subimagal . This stage precedes the Imago which is the period during which the insect acquires all its adult characteristics .
For example, a transitory , after having spent the months at the bottom of a River at the larval stage , begins its rise towards water surface. Limed in the " skin of the eau" , it starts a news driven. Its Cuticule yields on the back of the Thorax, enabling him to leave the head water, then the legs, then its Abdomen. The Sang is then directed towards the wings to unfold them for the first time. It is then a subimago.
The insect must then take time to make dry its wings. It is often an easy prey for all the " fish moucheurs ". If it has chance, the insect flies away to quickly seek a quiet corner in the Ripisylve, and starts its ultimate driven which transforms it into imago.
The subimago is generally duller than the imago, and has cerques (or cercodes) smaller.
The wings of a subimago can be very coloured, even practically black as for Baetis Niger . But once at the stage of imago, the éphéméroptère with the majority of time transparent wings (even if the presence of black veins, as for Ephemera danica , can change appearance it).
