This cutting was established in 1994. Previously (in 1991), the country was divided into 9 provinces (like 1948 with 1973):

  • Blue Nile (Al Djazirah, Blue Nile, White Nile, Sinnar)
  • Darfur (Darfur septentrional, southernmost & Western)
  • Kassala (Al Qadarif, Kassala, Red Sea)
  • Équatoria (Bahr Al Djabal, Eastern Équatoria & Westerner)
  • Khartoum (Khartoum)
  • Kordofan (septentrional, southernmost & Western Kordofan)
  • Northern (Northern, the Nile)
  • the higher Nile (Al Ouahdah, Jongley, the Nile superior)
  • Bahr Al-Ghazal (Al Buhayrat, Bahr Al septentrional & Western Ghazal, Warab)

From 1973 with 1976, various partitions made it possible to constitute 18 provinces.
