- Darfur (Darfur septentrional, southernmost & Western)
- Kassala (Al Qadarif, Kassala, Red Sea)
- Équatoria (Bahr Al Djabal, Eastern Équatoria & Westerner)
- Khartoum (Khartoum)
- Kordofan (septentrional, southernmost & Western Kordofan)
- Northern (Northern, the Nile)
- the higher Nile (Al Ouahdah, Jongley, the Nile superior)
- Bahr Al-Ghazal (Al Buhayrat, Bahr Al septentrional & Western Ghazal, Warab)
From 1973 with 1976, various partitions made it possible to constitute 18 provinces.
