Subdivisions of Philippines
The Filipino are divided into a hierarchy of local units of government (Local Government Units, LGU), the province ( lalawigan in Filipino) being the basic subdivision. In 2002, there are 79 provinces in the country, gathered in 17 areas ( rehiyon ). The provinces are subdivided in cities and municipalities, which themselves is made up of Barangay S . The barangay is the smallest LGU.
The areas are generally organized so as to gather provinces having the same cultural and ethnological characteristics.
The provinces are gathered in areas for reasons of administrative convenience. The majority of the governmental administrations have offices at the regional level, usually in the city having the statute of regional capital.
The areas themselves do not have a distinct body controlling, except for the Moslem Autonomous region of Mindanao and of the Administrative Région of Cordillera, which are autonomous.
In 2002, Philippines count 17 areas. The areas are geographically combined in three groups of islands: Luçon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
