Subdivisions of Greenland

This article treats subdivisions of the Greenland .

Description

Greenland is subdivided in three counties ( amter in Danish): Kitaa in the West, Tunu in the East and Avannaa in North.

Each one of these counties is subdivided in municipalities: Kitaa has of it 15, Tunu 2 and Avannaa 1.

There exist also two not-built-in zones, i.e. belonging to no municipality:

  • the National park of the North-East of Greenland, located at horse on the three counties and
  • the air base of Thulé, in Avannaa.

County of Kitaa (Western)

Kitaa (or Vestgrønland in Danish, i.e. West-Greenland), is located along the west coast of the island. The county is divided into fifteen municipalities (listed here South towards North): Lastly, a small portion of the National park of the North-East of Greenland is located in Kitaa and does not belong to any municipality.

County of Tunu (Is)

Tunu (or Østgrønland in Danish, i.e. Be-Greenland), is located along the east coast of the island; it is about the largest county of Greenland. The county is divided into two municipalities (listed here South towards North): The National park of the North-East of Greenland occupies all the northern half of Tunu and does not belong to any municipality.

County of Avannaa (Northern)

Avannaa (or Nordgrønland in Danish, i.e. North-Greenland), is located at the extreme north of the island. It has only one municipality: and two not-built-in zones:
  • the air base of Thulé, wedged inside the municipality of Qaanaaq
  • the National park of the North-East of Greenland, which occupies all the north-eastern half of the county.
