Subdivisions of England

In England, the management of the local governments and divided into four levels: on the level of the area, county S ( county ), District S ( Borough ) and civil Parish S ( civil parish ).

At the regional level

In England, the first subdivision is the area. Angeleterre counts 9 areas, each one containing several counties. The English areas were created in 1994 and, since 1996, are used to represent England with the the European Parliament. All these areas have the same statute, but the area of Large London ( Greater London ) lays out of more than capacity.

On the level of the counties

Within each English areas, the local authorities are divided in metropolitan counties and nonmetropolitan counties which gather the Shire counties and the unit authorities.

Metropolitan county

After the traditional Counties of England, Counties cérémonials of England then the administrative Counties of England, England is cut out in 82 metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties. Certain big cities were thus separated from their counties of origin to constitute counties with whole share.

Shire county

Created in 1974, these counties in the beginning were named " non-metropolitan counties". The 35 counties of this type cover most of the country.

Unit authority

The unit authorities (unitary authority) are territories, generally cities and their suburbs, which have a special statute like the Cités . Traditionally, they always form part of the county but they are independent administratively.

Large London

Created in 1965, the area of Large London is not officially a county.

The districts in England can have various statutes: city, Bourough or royal bourough. Moreover, one distinguishes three great types of districts

Metropolitan area

  • Metropolitan areas. The six metropolitan Counties are subdivided in 36 metropolitan areas.

District not-subway

London district

  • Borough Londoners. Since 1965, the Large London is divided into 31 boroughs, plus the City of London and of Westminster, that is to say 33 districts.

On the level of the civil parishes

A civil parish (or civil parish ) is smallest territorial Subdivision. It is directed by a council of parish ( parish council ) often named town council or city council . One counts approximately 8700 civil parishes in England. Since 1997, 100 new civil parishes were created. The law prohibits the constitution of such subdivisions in the Large London. The urbanized areas are seldom provided. Notable exception: Birmingham has a civil parish in its center, New Frankley. Thus, one cannot make of parallel between the common S French S and the parishes civil English S.
