Subalpine stage
In the mountainous solid masses of the moderated areas, the subalpine stage is included/understood between 1700-1900 m to 2300-2500 m of altitude. During the rise, it follows the mountain stage and precedes the alpine stage.
Flora
Because of the cold which shortens the season of vegetation the Feuillu S or deciduous trees do not remain at this altitude, one finds primarily coniferous. However, the Fir tree and the Hêtre of the mountain stage disappear and leave room to gasolines such as the Mélèze, the Sorbier or the Bouleau. Beyond the forest, one finds a layer shrubby of Rhododendrons, Genévrier.
Fauna
Habitat
It is on this level that one meets dwellings adapted particularly well: country cottages of mountain.
