Sub-continent

A sub-continent is part of a continent. There is no consensus on what constitutes a sub-continent. However, generally it is considered that a sub-continent is a separate subdivision of the continent remaining by something like a assembly line or by Tectonic plates. The sub-continent, is an expression generally used to indicate in French (in English and in other languages) the Indian Sous-continent, i.e. the South Asia.

Geological/geographical sub-continents

In the plate tectonics, a small continental plate connected to a larger continental plate can be applelée a sub-continent. According to this definition, the Indian sub-continent on the Indian plate and the Arab sub-continent are recognized like such. This last is generally not regarded geographically as a sub-continent because of the geographical absence of limit to the nord. Europe is only one peninsula since it is on the Eurasian plate.

Geographically, Europe is often described like a sub-continent of Eurasia, a vast territory in which Europe and Asia are delimited by assembly line and inland sea. In the same way, Australasia, the smallest continent and Greenland, the largest island are sometimes called sub-continents.

North America and South America are sometimes regarded as two sub-continents of the continent of Americas (or America) since they are connected by a Isthme. In the same way and for the same reason, Africa and Eurasia are sometimes regarded as two sub-continents which would form the Eurafrasie. However, America and Eurafrasie are generally regarded as supercontinents, composed of continents.

Cultural sub-continents

The term Indian Sous-continent is used also culturally and politically. It includes/understands India, Pakistan, Bengladesh, Nepal, Maldives, Boutan, and Sri Lanka, and often also of another south-Asian country. The area has great geographical differences like deserts, plates, forest rain, mountains and myriads of languages, ethnos groups and religions.

Under-areas so different culturally from the remainder of the continent are sometimes indicated like such (Central America and the Middle East).
