Style of Sambor
The Style of Sambor is the first period of Khmer art which developed VI {{E}} with the XIII {{E}} century in the South-East Asia (today Southern of the Vietnam, Kampuchea and Thailand of the south).
VII {{E}} century date the first great Khmer architectural unit composed of turn-sanctuaries joined together in an enclosure with Sambor Prei Kuk, from where the expression “Style of Sambor” , which indicates the first period of the Khmer art until the IX {{E}} century. This period resembles Hindu art much. The Sculpture offers an artistic interest larger than the Architecture; it is especially represented by Statue S, influenced partly by the art goupta which generally represents Vishnou or the divinity known under the name of Hari-Hara, association of Vishnou and Çiva.
At the end of the VII {{E}} century, the reign of the king Jayavarman II in Kampuchea, come from the island of Java, introduced worship of Devarâja; at that time also the concept of the “Mountain of the World appears” in Kampuchean architecture: the mountain, natural or artificial, axis of the universe, are incorporated in the temple. Simplified at the beginning, the plan will become gradually more complex: central tower and secondary turns built on a vast platform surrounded by steps.
