Sturtien
The Sturtien is the first stage of the Cryogénien, system of the éon Protérozoïque; it extends from 850 to 650 million years before the Christian era.
He sees the beginning of a glaciation which finishes at the end of the Varangien, that is to say 630 million years before the Christian era. Currently two theses are opposed:
- this glaciation covered the whole of the planet not leaving interstitial water (assumption of the Ground snowball);
- a oceanic band around the equator would not have cold.
The population of Acritarche S strongly decreased during this glaciation and it would seem that the levels of oxygen increased the end of the glaciation shortly after.
