Sturmtiger

The Sturmtiger , whose name of origin is 38cm RW61 auf Sturmmörser Tiger is a Tank heavy German developed and produced 1943 with 1944.

It was one of the rarest alternatives of the heavy tank Tigre I, with as arms a giant mortar with 380mm. The development of this machine intended for the attack of heavily strengthened sectors began in August 1943. Standard mortar RW61 with tube short L5/4 was designed at the origin by Rheinmetall-Borsig for the German navy to fight against the attacks Sous-marin are enemy. To box the extraordinary retreat which could reach 40 tons, the robust frame of Tiger I was selected, and the decision was made to use cases returning of the face in order not to disturb the series production of the tank. The compartment of combat consisted of a casemate bolted on the lower case. The Blindage had a thickness of 150mm on the front face and 80mm on the sides. Later a circular steel counterweight was added on the mouth of mortar of certain vehicles to facilitate rise in it. The enormous self-propelled projectiles by rockets were 149 cm long and weighed 330kg. To charge these ammunition on board, an bracket of loading was installed with the right back of the casemate. Because of size of the projectiles and space on reduced board, only 14 of between-them could be embarked. The production in the form of conversion of Tigers I into Sturmtigers until the end of December began in August 1944, period during which 18 specimens were finished and dispatched with the combat in the the Ardennes.
