The world and the languages created by J.R.R. Tolkien generated a true research sector tolkienienne.

Critical studies

Many works in English language were dedicated to the work of Tolkien. The French studies are rarer and often recent, testifying to the relatively late interest carried with Tolkien by French-speaking criticism:
  • Jacques Bergier, Admirations , Christian Bourgois, 1970. See in particular chapter 7, J.R.R. Tolkien or the Lord of the rings . This collection, where Bergier at the time evokes its admiration for several still untranslated Anglo-Saxon authors in French, made known the Lord of the Rings in Christian Bourgois who published it in 1972-1973.

Work of 51 charts recalling the voyages of Frodon and his/her companions in the Lord of the Rings .

  • Karen Wynn Fonstad, The Atlas off Middle-earth , Boston: 1981; second revised edition (largely) increased in 1991. Although still untranslated in French, this reference book benefits from the Silmarillion and the series Histoire of the Earth of the Medium.

This work approaches the academic contribution of Tolkien to OED and explores in return the influence of this work on its universe of fiction.
