In 1805, Detroit underwent a Incendie devastator, which destroyed the major part of the French colonial architecture of the city. A little later the father Gabriel Richard said, will meliora of Speramus; cineribus of resurget (“we hope for better things; it will result from ashes”) which became the official currency of the city. The judge Augustus B. Woodward conceived a plan similar to the design of Pierre Charles the Child of the town of Washington.

Towards the end of the century, Detroit was then called “Paris of the Midwest” for its elegant architecture and open public spaces. The six others turns contain offices. Currently, they were the world head offices of General Motors.

The Center Rebirth was conceived to revitalize the center town of the city. However, it did not reinforce the accesses. With large concrete berms, that walled it with far from the traffic along Jefferson Avenue, it was described by its criticisms like a " forteresse" isolated, or a city inside the city.

General Motors, which bought the whole complex in 1996 at a cost of $500 million USD, pawned to do it more " ouvrir" at the surrounding city. During the following decade, the concrete berms were destroyed, of new shops and a new entry of glass was opened on the level of the street, and new a " Wintergarden" was built in front of the river Detroit.
