Strong current of Center

The strong current of Center is located between the island of Center and the Pointe of the Strong current in the Finistere in Brittany.

It is a point of required passage for the ships circulating between the coast Atlantique and the English Channel because more in the west, of the high funds, the island of Center then the roadway of Center bar the road on more than 30 miles. For safety reasons and in order to minimize the potential of Pollution, the large ships are not authorized any more to borrow this passage.

It is also a zone of very dangerous navigation because of the running very violent one generated by the Marée S (up to 6 sharp water nodes). The current raises, even by moderated breeze, an awkward very strong sea including for ships of a certain tonnage. The guides of navigation recommend to wait the shift, moment or the current is cancelled and the sea is calmed, to cross the strong current of Center.

The Strong current of Center is delimited, side ground by the Phare of the Old woman and the Tourelle of the Punt, and broad side by the high funds which border the island of Center.

Various facts

  • Following an error of Navigation, the Escorteur of squadron Duperré pursued in the Strong current of Center the January 12th 1978 about midnight. A water way deprived it of propulsion. After an evacuation of the major part of the crew, the ship could be towed on Brest the following day.

  • the May 26th 2006 Edouard Michelin lost the life there whereas it fished the bar on a Ligneur. The Boat: the Freedom , sank. The Owner-fisherman, Guillaume Normalizing , has him also perished in the shipwreck. The boat was found lying two days later by 70 m basic, without apparent damage, to a few 15 km in the west of the Island of Center.
