Stravinski fountain
The fountain Stravinski (or fountain of the automats , work of 1983) is the fruit of a collaboration between Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle. It is carried out within the framework of the percentage of the budget of the construction of the Center Georges-Pompidou. It is an public order between the town of Paris, the ministry for the culture and the Center Pompidou. Work is the property of the town of Paris which takes care of its maintenance.
This monument evokes the musical work of the Russian type-setter Stravinski. Russian type-setter of the 20th century, this one is the symbol of eclecticism and artistic internationalism . The fountain, just like were to it certain representations of the type-setter, can appear revolting and be prone to polemic or debate. One finds for the two monuments this provocation.
The Stravinski fountain is built on the Stravinski place close to IRCAM (the research center in modern music). It is made up of 16 sculptures which directly refer to the compositions of the musician. Seven are of Jean Tinguely, six of Niki de Saint Phalle and three of the two artists. It is a work moving. The sculptures of the two authors, all mechanics, black or coloured are animated by the force of water.
The fountain in general is (or was) a place of rest and meeting in the city. The Stravinski fountain recreates that. The sounds which the fountain produces evoke the music. And work from its site and its nature offers a multiplicity from point of view. The mobility of the sculptures coupled with the richness of the environment offers to the spectator a work in perpetual mobility and questions us on the perenniality of the work of Article.
One thinks in particular with this Stravinski fountain of the fountain Castle-Chinon that the two artists had realized for François Mitterrand before the Stravinski fountain.
