Straubing

Straubing is a commune of Bavaria in Germany (in Low-Bavaria) and Capitale of the district ( Landkreis ) Straubing-Bogen. In North the Bavarian Forest and the the Danube are. The city counts: 44633  inhabitants (2005). The inhabitants are called “Straubinger”.

The town of Straubing is in Gäuboden where there are perfect conditions for agriculture. Every year, there is a great festival with Straubing, the Gäubodenvolksfest, which is similar to the Beer festival of Munich. More than 1 million people will see Gäubodenvolksfest each year.

The latter is twinned since 1970 with the common Frenchwoman Romans-sur-Isère (located in the department of Drome, in Rhone-Alps area).

History

In archeology, one distinguishes a Culture from Straubing to the Bronze Age. After the Period of Hallstatt, the Romans conquer the area. They reign on Sorviodurum during four centuries. The now exposed Roman treasure in the municipal museum testifies some. Then, the Bavarii live there which give the name Strupinga to their village. The emperor Otton I {{er}} (936-973) made area a stronghold of its line. In 1029, évêché of Augsburg receives the village of Straubing in prerogative.

In 1218, Louis I {{er}} of Bavaria founds the new town of Straubing which becomes a center of the administration Wittelsbach ienne. In 1353, Straubing becomes residence of the duchy of Bavaria-Straubing. After the death of the last duke, the city is managed by the High-Bavaria. It is in Straubing that in 1435, the wife occults of the single heir to the throne of Bavaria, the commoner Agnès Bernauer, was drowned in the the Danube on order of the duke. In 1568, Jakob Sandtner builds a Plan-relief city. After a conversion with the reform, the city returned to the Catholicisme.

During the War Thirty Year old, almost half of the population dies. In 1704, the Autrichiens conquer the city. In 1780, a fire destroys most of the city. In 1812, the first Gäubodenvolksfest takes place. At the end of the 19th century, the prison of Straubing is founded. In 1920, there is a revolt against the abolition of private demolition. After the Second world war, the city flowers economically.

During the last years, one builds a port and a center of Biotechnologie. In 1997, the 1100e birthday of the city is celebrated. In 2003, one celebrates the 650e birthday of the duchy of Bavaria-Straubing.
