Strategic oceanic force
Within the marine Frenchwoman, the strategic oceanic Force (FOST) is one of the two components of the underwater Forces.
General information
The strategic oceanic Force constitutes the main component of the strategic nuclear forces French (FNS)
The FOST is an organic command (i.e. intended for the preparation and the maintenance in condition of the force) and operational (implementation of the force).
-
the operational base of the strategic oceanic force (BOFOST) located at the Long Island, ensures the support and the coordination of the maintenance of the systems of weapons and SNLE.
-
the flotilla of the nuclear submarines launchers of machines, which ensures the maintenance in operational condition (exercise, drive).
The FOST is placed under the command of a general officer of navy whose acronym is ALFOST.
The staff of the FOST is based with Brest since the beginning of the years 2000. It was based before in Houilles in the Parisian suburbs.
Nuclear deterrence
The strategic force was born from the will of the general De Gaulle to have the nuclear weapon. The SNLE, because of their discretion in their zone of patrol, ensure the guarantee of a nuclear striking of reprisal (striking as a second).
The first SNLE which returned in service was Frightening the , which January 28th 1972 installs for its first patrol.
Six buildings of this class were in function in the Années 1980.
With the end of the Cold war, the Dissuasion is ensured in 2006 uninterrupted by four SNLE (three SNLE-NG class Triumphing and a SNLE (the Inflexible)) who take turns so that with less the one building is in operational patrol permanently, throughout the year.
Renewal of the Fleet
The oceanic forces are in the course of renewal with the startup of the class Triumphing (SNLE/NG). The third of the series, the Vigilant one was allowed with the active service in November 2004. The last will be allowed with the active service in 2010 to replace the Inflexible one. The missile (MSBS) M51 should soon equip the SNLE/NG and replace current M45.
