Strait of Perugia

The strait of Perugia (宗谷海峡 soyakaikyō , “strait Soya” in Japanese) is the strait which separates the island from Hokkaido of the island of Sakhaline. Length of 40  km and major of 25 with 40  m, it connects between them the Mer of Japan and the Mer of Okhotsk.

It draws its name from the French navigator Jean-François of Perugia, which discovered it in 1787.
