Strait of Kammon

The strait of Kammon (関門海峡, Kammon Kaikyō ) or strait of Shimonoseki is the band of sea which separates two from the four islands of the Japan, Honshū, to the level of the point of Shimonoseki (下関, which gives the kan name of the strait, transformed into kam because of the connection) and Kyūshū, of which the city nearest to the strait is Kitakyūshū, of which the old name, Moji (門司) gives the My name. The strait envase at the rate of 15 cm per annum, and dredging made possible the construction at low prices of the new airport of Kitakyūshū.
