Strait of Dardanelles

The strait of Dardanelles ( Çanakkale boğazi in Turkish, of Çanakkale , “manor house with the potteries”), or Dardanelles , is a maritime passage connecting the Aegean Sea to the Marmara Sea.

The possession of this strait, like that of the the Bosphorus, allows the control of the sea links between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

Origin of the name

Old the Greek indicated the strait under the name of Hellēspontos , (Latinized Hellespont), of Hellé , character of the Greek Mythologie, and pontos “sea”.

They are the Venetian and the génois which, at the 11th century, indicated the strait of the name of the dardanelli (plural), fortresses which were drawn up on two banks, at the place more tightened (1300 m) of the strait, near to the coastal town of Dardanos in Troade, from which the name came, according to Homère, of an indigenous tribe called Dardanoi .

Description

The strait is long 61 km, but broad from only 1,2 to 6 km, with a maximum depth of 82 m for an average of 55 Mr.

The strait is traversed by a current of surface since the Marmara Sea towards the Aegean Sea, and by a basic water current of stronger Salinité in contrary direction. The salinity of water of Noire sea surface is indeed close to 18 to 18,5 g/kg, whereas the salinity of the Aegean Sea, because of an intense evaporation and insufficiency of the food, remains ranging between 35 and 39 g/kg.

Like the Bosphorus, it separates the Europe (here the peninsula of Gallipoli) from the Asia.

Statute of the strait

The strait is governed by the Convention of Montreux of July 20th, 1936 on the mode of the straits Turkish. This treaty, whose France is agent, grants Turkey the control of the Straits of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

These straits are regarded as International water for the tradind ships, and Turkey does not have the right to restrict their use in times of peace. The Turkish maritime authorities can inspect the ships for medical reasons or of safety, to impose right-of-way, but do not have the right to prohibit the crossing of the strait to them.
