Stragari , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Страгари, is a village and a municipality of Serbia located in the district of Šumadija. Stragari belongs to the five municipalities composing the Town of Kragujevac. In 2002, the village counted 967 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 4526.

Geography

Stragari, located at and 250 m above the sea level, is to 30 km in the North-West of Kragujevac and to 120 km in the south of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.

The locality is with the confluence of Srebrnica and the Jasenica, on the north-eastern slopes of the mounts Rudnik, whose culminating point is the mount Cvijić (1132 m).

The municipality of Stragari shelters one of the most important mine of Amiante of Europe.

History

Stragari is mentioned for the first in a Turkish census in 1476. It received the statute of “city” in 1922.

In 1805, during the First revolt Serb against the Turks, the first government Serb met in the Monastère of Voljavča (14th century) which is close to Stragari.

Economy

The municipality of Stragari is primarily rural. One practices there the culture of the fruits and vegetables; it is also a cattle-breeding area.

In addition to the asbestos mine, the most important company of Stragari, which bears the name of Stragarit , delivers to the industry paper.

Tourism

The area of Stragari offers possibilities for the activities of mountain (Rudnik mounts) and for hunting. The thermal spa of Voljavča is located on the territory of the municipality.

The amateurs of history and culture can visit the orthodoxe monasteries Serb of Voljavča and Blagoveštenje, both located at proxmity of Stragari.
