Stoumont

Stoumont is a Commune of Belgium in the Province of Liege located in Walloon region.

The commune counted on July 1st 2004 2.945 inhabitants (1.478 men and 1.467 women), for a surface of 109,79 km ². The commune occupies an important part of the average Amblève, surroundings of the Cascade of Coo at the entry of Remouchamps. It draws the major part of its forest tourism and trading incomes.

Very undulating rural district with the broken relief which varies between 150 meters (reads of Amblève) and 550 meters, it offers splendid panoramas of meadows and timbered extents, furrowed by the Amblève in particular close to the Château of Froidcourt dominating the river or at the village of Lorcé, the locality of Congo or to the hamlets of Coiled and Monthouet (natural amphitheater on the road of Spa). The Funds of Quareux on Amblève and the Ninglinspo, a small affluent of Amblève which dug small cascades, are still of other tourist places very attended in summer period. Stoumont has naturally gas mineral springs which spout out of its basement to the locality Bru, to Chevron. For questions of logistics, this water is bottled a little higher, at the village of Lorcé near the E25 highway which connects Liege to Luxembourg.

History

  • Under the Old Mode, the area belonged to the abbey principality of Stavelot - Malmedy.
  • It is between Stoumont and the village of Gleize that was stopped the 18 and December 19th 1944 during the Bataille of the Ardennes, the northern column ( Colonne Joachim Peiper ) of the German offensive. Intense combat of tanks took place within the village of Gleize, and the body-with-bodies in the surrounding meadows. The principal committed American unit was celebrates it 82e Div. A tank and a museum located opposite the church of Gleize commemorate this event, as well as a stele places church at Cheneux.
