Stopping distance

The distance stopping of a vehicle is the theoretical conventional distance necessary to a vehicle to stop taking into account its speed.

Definition

It is calculated as the sum of the distance covered during the time of perception reaction (Distance of perception-reaction) and of the Distance braking.

Value according to speed

The values of the stopping distance are, on a dry road of average adherence (correspondent with coefficient of longitudinal friction equal to 0,7 (see Distance braking)) and according to speed, the following ones:

In road design, to evaluate the sight distance on a fixed obstacle which corresponds to the stopping distance of the vehicle, one takes as reference a coefficient of longitudinal friction corresponding to a slightly wet road and a worn tire (from 0,31 to 0,46 for France and from 0,28 to 0,38 for Canada), which gives different distances stopping and definitely longer:
