Pierreuse is a district of the town of Liege. Located behind the Palate of the Prince-Bishops of Liege and Palate parks it. The Pierreuse district includes/understands, in addition to Pierreuse (the word “street” is not employed): the street Birdcage, the street Fond Saint-Were useful, with Perished, the Court of Tiny and the Montagne of Bueren.
History
About the year 1000, Notger, Prince-Bishop of Liege, made set up an immense fortification which connected various churches of Liege. In order to provide itself out of stone, it made open a career behind the palate of the Prince-Bishops. This trench, dug in the hillsides, went up to the Citadel and went down towards the old valley from the Légia (currently the Holy-Marguerite district). The houses built in the trench naturally took the name of “stony”.
Characteristics
- At the time or the Citadel was not yet a hospital but accommodated soldiers, Pierreuse was a district of prostitutes and travelling acrobats (bear leader…).
- Then, with the wave of Italian immigration towards Belgium, the district took airs of sicilian village.
- the district especially known for the many combat is carried out against the large building sites which wanted to renovate these historical quarters or to make there pass an expressway; but also for its user-friendliness all the year and at the time of its annual festival.
- about thirty associations have their seats into Stony.
- the inhabitants claim the zip code 4010 (not used in Liege 4000,4020 or 4030…). But not all.
