Stokkem
Stokkem is a village and an old commune, belonging today to Dilsen-Stokkem, town of Belgium located in the province of Limbourg.
Stokkem is located at left bank of the Meuse and the counts of Looz built a fortress there to defend themselves against their neighbors of Juliers and Gueldre. This castle is strengthened by the Prince-bishop Érard of Marck at the beginning of XVIe century.
Stokkem, old C-Ws communication Stockheim or Stockem , recognized like city in 1244 by Arnold de Looz, obtains an enclosing wall and becomes one of the 23 Bonnes Cities of the Principauté of Liege.
November 5th, 1605 the church and 350 of the 420 houses are destroyed by a fire. In 1702 the castle is demolished by the troops of the United Provinces; the fortification was not useful any more for the control of Maastricht, city which, since the Guerre Eighty Year old was codirigée by the Prince-bishop of Liege and the General states of the United Provinces. In 1839 again 120 houses are destroyed by fire.
