not to be confused with the first name Romain ---- The Romains of the traditional time employed a small number of first names ( prænomen ) within the framework of their system of the Tria nominated .
The women were usually designated by their name of people or gentilice (the Nomen of their father) feminized: the girl of Mr. Tullius Cicero named Tullia. With their marriage, they did not change a gentilice. In the event of possible confusion, one associated a kind cognomen , sometimes simply Major or Minor to distinguish between the elder one and the junior (thus Mr. Antonius it had two girls: Antonia Major and Antonia Minor). Other times, the cognomen of the father or husband, with the Genitive, were enough: Ass P. Anni senatoris filia, “Ass, (girl) of the senator Publius Ass”. Other processes met at the end of the Republic, like the use of the paternal cognomen feminized (Cæcilia Metella Crassi: “Cæcilia Metella (girl of Quintus Cæcilius Metellus), (wife) of (Publius Licinius) Crassus”.
1) the fact that the letter C. note a first name whose initial one is variable, Caius or Gaius , is explained by the history of this letter. To consult the articles Rhotacisme (section “influences on the Latin alphabet”) like Latin alphabet for more details.
To note that the first names Secundus , Tertius , Quartus , Quintus (Q.) , Sextus (Sex.) , Septimus , Octavius and Decimus refer to the order of the births, because they mean: second , third , fourth , fifth , sixth , seventh , eighth and tenth . Nonus for ninth was not employed, because the prefix Non- had a negative connotation.
The first name Aulus is also found at the Étrusques, in the form Avile .
According to the Latin Proverb Nomen (is) omen (“the name is one predicts”), each family required of soothsayers to in general determine the first names which were beneficial for him, three or four, sometimes less. Only these beneficial first names were used. When these first names all had been given once to alive children, the following carried like first name a sequence number. Strong infant mortality made that these numbered children were not majority, but they were rather current.
