The Stiftung Lesen (in French “Foundation Lira”) is a German foundation with educational, cultural and social vocation, based with Mainz (the Rhineland-Palatinat).

Presentation

Stiftung Lesen works for the promotion of the Lecture by all of books, magazines and newspapers; the realization of this objective passing moreover by new technologies of information and the communication. It is a think tank, ideas and proposals for all those which want to transmit the pleasure of reading.

Actions

Since 1988, this foundation develops and concretizes many projects on a federal and regional scale (at the German level of the Länder) aiming at reinforcing the role of the reading in the company of information. That in particular consists in conducting campaigns in the establishment school, carrying out research tasks on the reading, or acting near the bookstores. With this intention, the foundation acquired with its cause of many patrons and important supports in the mediae.

It publishes its own review “Lesen Forum”.

Stiftung Lesen is moreover founding member of EU*READ (HTTP www.eu-read.com), the European network of the reading.

Operation

Stiftung Lesen is financed essentially by partners within the framework of projects. It receives also contributions of the members of the Board of directors and gifts of private individuals.

The double chamber system of the foundation consists of the Council of the foundation, representing the organizations partners on the one hand and a Board of directors on the other hand, gathering natural persons.

Stiftung Lesen is traditionally under the high patronage of the federal President of the Germany.
