A self-adhesive (or sticker , of English to stick , to stick ) is a support of text or images having on its lower face of a fine layer Adhésif making it possible to fix it on a surface, on a purely generally final basis. The word sticker represents at the same time the sticker in itself and the fact of sticking the sticker.

The adhesive part is normally covered by a protection (the transfer) as long as the sticker was not affixed. Certain stickers do not use adhesive, but are designed to hold on very smooth surfaces (Verre, Céramique) by electrostatic Effet. In this case they can be withdrawn or repositioned without deteriorating the surface which carries them.

History

The principle of the sticker appears little of time after the development of effective and cheap adhesives, towards the end of the Années 1960. It takes quickly the place of the Décalcomanie S, and becomes very much used in the Années 1970 with 1990 as an advertizing object. The number and the variety of the publicity stickers produced for this reason made of it an easy object of Collection of access (because little expensive) and very widespread.

In 1979, the law of December 29th prohibits the affixing of stickers out of authorized spaces; in parallel, the second Oil crisis and the economic conjecture which follows makes prefer other supports of commnunication to the advertisers. The sticker remains however a support for specific publicity campaigns. To release their responsibility in the event of wild posting, the advertisers add most of the time on the stickers published the mention “ to stick only on the authorized places, in accordance with the law of December 29th, 1979 ”.

The stickers militant and artistic (objects and practice) become starting from the Années 1980 an alternative means of Communication, and a phenomenon expanding since the Années 1990: relative low the price of production and the facility of the stickers to being stuck anywhere are two explanations of this often qualified practice of wild .
