Steve Swallow
Steve Swallow is a Bassiste, Contrebassiste and type-setter of Jazz American, born on October 4th, 1940 with New York City.
Child it studies the Piano and the Trompette before turning to the Contrebasse at 14 years. He studies then the composition at the university of Yale, before settling with New York in 1960 following his meeting with Paul and Carla Bley. At only 20 years it takes part in the legendary trio of Jimmy Giuffre, with Paul Bley, and writes in fact an important page of the history of the jazz. About the same time it begins a long collaboration with the vibraphonist Gary Burton.
In 1964 it integrates the four-bit byte of Art Farmer and starts and to write music. Its compositions are known to be generally nervous and merry, while being complex harmonically and rythmiquement. Its partitions had a strong exposure from their presence in the Real Book, but also because they are include in his albums, Swallow considering that the diffusion of the partitions can be only beneficial for the music.
In 1970, it gives up the double bass for the low guitar with 5 cords, on a guitar which it makes build.
In 1974-76, he is professor with the prestigious Berklee College off Music.
He is the companion of the pianist, leader and type-setter Carla Bley.
