Steve Smith (musician)
Steve Smith (born the August 21st 1954 with Brockton with the Massachusetts) is American Batteur of Jazz, Rock and pop.
Youth
Steve Smith receives its first kit of battery in 1956, old only two years. It begins the courses at nine years, and has its first true battery with twelve. In 1973, after the college, it enters to the university of music of Berklee to Boston (Massachusetts), and obtains its diploma in 1976. Its particular professor is then Bill Flanagan. He takes part in several groups during his studies before launching out in a professional path.
Professional path
He starts to turn with the Violoniste Jazz Jean-Luc Ponty in 1978 before joining the rock group Journey. Benefitting from the commercially flourishing period of the group (1978 - 1985), its fame is established.
It is from now on known to have played with pop artists like Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, and especially of the musicians and groups Jazz of which Mike Mainieri 'S Steps Ahead, Wadada Leo Smith, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Liebman, Larry Coryell, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Anthony Jackson, Aydin Esen, George Brooks, Michael Zilber, Steve Marcus, Andy Fusco, Kai Eckhardt, Lee Musiker, Howard Levy, Oteil Burbridge, Jerry Goodman, and Bill Evans.
It has also a more personal group, Vital Information.
Its technical qualities and its vision of the music were worth to him to be recognized like one of the best beaters of the moment by various magazines. He is also the author of a teaching DVD " Steve Smith Drumset Technical - History off the U.S. Beat" in 2003.
