Steve Reeves , born the January 21st 1926 with Glasgow, Montana (the United States), deceased on May 1st 2000 with Escondido, California (the USA), is a bodybuilder, actor and American author. Thanks to its exceptional measurements, it began its career of actor in the Fifties. It incarnated mythological roles of hero, like Hercules. Its cinematographic career will be more than satisfactory insofar as he were the actor best paid with Sophia Loren. When it took its retirement precociously it started to write and raise horses, its passion of always.

Biography

It was born in a ranch in Montana. His/her father died in an accident of farm. At the six months age, it gained already the title of “baby in better health in the county” (“Healthiest Baby off Valley County”). Its family emigrated in California little time afterwards.

Success as body-builder

He engaged in the army, where he charged the trucks, and used his spare time with the gym. Seeing the results of these exercises, it decided to make professional Culturisme. During its service in the army, it gained the price “Mr. Pacific Coast” in Oregon in 1947 and then that of “Mr. America”, “Mr. World” and “Mr. Universe”.

With the cinema

It goes to New York, where it studies to be an actor, and moves then on Hollywood. It did not obtain many roles at the beginning of its career, with share the role of inspector whom gave him to Edward D. Wood Jr. in Jail Bait (1954). It obtained small roles on television also, but it was its contribution as boyfriend of Jane Powell in Athena (1954) which pointed out it by Pietro Francisci. This one decided it to come to Europe to turn Work of Hercules (Fatiche di Ercole) (1958). Criticisms made the pout in front of this mythology of bottom stages, but public engoua for these accounts epic “of sword and sandal”, in spite of the poor quality of the band, and that contributed to make of him a star. He continued on his impetus and opened it with others, such ED Fury, Mark Forest, reg. Park, while playing of the muscular mythological figures like Samson, Ursus or Colossus.

A wound with the shoulder during a cascade of a film turning forced it to take its retirement, and it engaged in promotion of the natural body-building, while continuing its passion for the breeding of horses in its ranch. In spite of an Olympic form, he died of a Lymphome at 74 years. This is probably due to the malaria which it had contracted at the time of its military service during its youth.

Family life

After having divorced on September 4th, 1956 Sandra Smith whom he had married on January 31st, 1955, he was married in Aline Czartjarwicz on June 24th, 1963, until the death of this one on July 24th, 1989.

Anecdotes

“Large bicepses” are not synonymous with “force”. Two actresses, who were the partners of Steve Reeves, testify to this paradoxical case in their memories:
  • Mylène Demongeot on the turning of the Battle of Marathon (Battaglia di Maratona) in 1959: There is a scene where it must run while carrying me, but I slip on the Oilcomme Baby an eel… It is not able besides to carry me a long time. In spite of these two anecdotes, one can however see photographs of Steve making of tractions with only one arm (thing that few people are able in the world) or even raising 45 kg in each arm on a tilted bench. It used weights of 50 kg (by arm) for the exercise of developed lying tilted with haltères (by making several series). With regard to tractions, it could make so much repetitions which it stuck a disc of 20 kg to increase the difficulty, whereas it made already 100 kg.

It should not be thought that the body-builders have large muscles, because they make “gonflette”, but because they are able to use exceptionally heavy loads with which an average man could be seriously wounded.
