They are trees, shrubs, lianas or herbaceous plants of the subtropics to tropical. One can quote the kinds:
- Theobroma with in particular the Cacao-tree ( Theobroma cocoa ) of which the seeds are used to produce the chocolate.
- Cola with the species Cola acuminata which gives the Noix of cola consumed for its stimulative virtues and aphrodisiacs. Cola nut extracts were used at the origin in various commercial drinks called “cola”.
The phylogenetic classification gathers the Bombacacées, the Tiliacées and Sterculiacées within the family of the Malvacées.
