Stepanakert (in Azeri: Xankəndi , in Armenian Ստեփանակերտ ) is the capital of the Republic of the Haut-Karabagh, of swears territory pertaining to the Azerbaïdjan or de facto republic independent under narrow control of the Arménie. The great majority of the inhabitants are Armenian (the remainder is Azeri).
Presentation
The control of the city was a subject of conflict between Armenians and Azeris. However, to date, Stepanakert is under Armenian control. But this irrefutable fact is not recognized by the international community. The city was founded (it was then a simple borough) in 1917, after the revolution of October and obtained its name of Stepanakert in 1923 in the honor of Stepan Chahoumian, a communist Armenian chief of Bakou (Azerbaïdjan). The area of Haut-Karabagh was seen granting a statute of autonomy when it belonged to the Soviet Union, it had the statute of Oblast.
However, when Azerbaïdjan declares its independence in 1991, Stepanakert, the Azeri government wished to take again the full control of the area of Haut-Karabagh what involved in cascade of the pogroms of Armenians through the Azeri Republic. The hostilities between Azeris and Armenians are officially finished since 1994 and the signature of a cease-fire, but the line of control separating the two armies is always mined and closed with the displacement of the civilians, without counting very regular violations of the cease-fire, until today (2007).
The saving in Stepanakert rests on the agro-alimentary , the trade of the Soie like on the Vin. However, this economy still remains very weak.
