Stendal

Formerly city of the Hanseatic League German, Stendal in the middle of the district of Altmark (in the north of Bundesland of Saxony-Anhalt, one of the oldest agricultural zones of Germany at the edge of the Elba) is now located between Berlin and Hanover. Stendal is twinned with the town of Grenoble in France. The historian of art and famous archeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann was born to with it. The writer Henri Beyle (Stendhal) there having passed at the time of the Bataille of Wagram would have borrowed the name of the city for name of author in homage to the latter.
