Stellar kingdom of Manticore
The stellar Royaume of Manticore is generally known like Manticore and in summary RSM; it is a fictitious star-nation in l'" Honorverse ", which is useful basic for a series of books and stories written by David Weber and others, and published by Baen Books.
The stellar Kingdom of Manticore was founded in the system of Manticore, which is composed of a binary star system with three livable planets for the men, and of the junction of the noeux exchange of the hole of worm of Manticore.
This single combination of livable planets and the local monopoly of the instantaneous voyage via the junction made the Kingdom stellar of Manticore economically and diplomatically enormously more powerful than the standard for a system of single star-nations. Indeed, Manticore can, very favorably, being compared with the majority of the systems of Ligue solarienne which are generally inhabited since longer, contain more populations and have infrastructures more important than the stellar Kingdom of Manticore.
These favorable assets, and of the financial efforts required to exploit them correctly, had like consequence the development of an extended merchant marine and well financed research programs. Manticore also has a very effective military navy with a strong tradition of excellence and institutional history.
A popular nickname for a inhabitant of the stellar Kingdom of Manticore is Manty ( Manties in the plural).
History of the stellar Kingdom of Manticore
Manticore started as a cryogenic colony (vessel sub-luminic, interstellar arch) left the Earth. Forwarding was particularly well prepared and of the money had been left on Earth to protect the colony against attempts from takeover of the system before the arrival of the vessel. During the 640 years necessary to the vessel colony `' Jason'' to go to Manticore, the developments in technology of gravity had made the voyage hyper-space sure. Consequently, on their arrival the colonists were greeted by employees already establishing the infrastructure on Manticore, most moderate of three livable planets of the système.
Little time after, a plague (probably of local origin) killed more than half of the population.
It is in reaction to this event that a monarchical mode was introduced so that the new colonists invited to compensate for the losses of the plague do not take political control. These new colonists were divided two categories, those which could pay all or a certain part of their voyage (Yeomen) and those not being able (of the Zero-Compensators). This arrangement dominated by an aristocracy at summer modified by Elizabeth I, the second monarch, who proved to be better as operations policy than the nobility; after it, the RSM had an effective monarchy, and not simply a constitutional figurehead
Political structure
The RSM is for a long time a Constitutional monarchy.
Its Head of State is, at the time of the history of the novels, a queen (Elizabeth III).
The Parliament is composed of a Upper House (lords) whose adhesion is hereditary, and of a Lower House (Commun runs) whose members are elected and cannot be members of the aristocracy.
The Crown is the Head of State, and names a government formed by the political parts dominating at the Parliament. The executive power of the Crown is exerted by the Cabinet, carried out by a Prime Minister who must be with the head of one majority to the House of Lords.
Political decision making in RSM is strongly affected by the political conflicts between principal the parts. An example is the annexation of the Medusa planet, close to a terminus recently discovered of the junction. It could not be included with the RSM following the opposition of the liberal party and preserving association. Instead of that, a weak parliamentary majority, decided to form a protectorate on planet. Another example is the declaration of the war against the Popular republic of Harbor after their attack on the marine of the RSM and of its base of Hancock. Preserving association refused to vote for the declaration partly because of short martial which awaited the captain Pavel Young, the oldest son of the effective chief of association. The liberal party opposed the declaration even after the attack on the basis of the principle that violence forever nothing arranged, and is, in any event, almost always illegitimate.
The six principal political parts of Manticore are:
- It left center, favorable to a hard anti-Havenite foreign politics and a conservative domestic policy of tax constraint. The centrists were behind the naval expansion of Manticore and were the force behind the formation of the Alliance of Manticore (of nation-stars located on the way of the expansion of Le Havre).
- loyal supporters with the Crown, of which principal concern, and the limit with any measurement, is the conservation of the power of the Crown. They are represented the most on Gryphon for historical reasons (see Histoire of the stellar Kingdom of Manticore 1721 p.d. Soulèvement of Gryphon.). The loyal supporters form usually coalitions with the centrists.
- the liberal party, which seeks to apply some measurements of welfare state and is wary basically of the military actions. Their paramount principle in the foreign politics is that the ¨violence never solves rien¨.
- preserving association, a political faction reactionary who resists actively any measurement which could in general threaten the privileges of the aristocracy and of the House of Lords in particular. Their foreign politics is isolationist (because the expansion threatens to dilute their influence).
- It left progressive, which is opposed to the budget deficit like the centrists, but wishes to reduce the military expenditure and has little interest for the foreign politics. The progressive ones also believe that there is little hope to gain a war against Le Havre.
- It left the new men, a faction which opposes the concentration power in the hands of the aristocracy and " capacity which est". It is of a character ambiguity in the policy of Manticorian, uniting with any faction which will support their interests at the Parliament.
Foreign affairs
The RSM is combined with:
Note: Because of the policies of the government of the baron High Ridge, Erewhon left alliance and signed a mutual treaty of defense with the République of Harbor (RdH). In the resumption of the active war between alliance and Le Havre, Erewhon does not take part any more in the war, because is not obliged to join RdH. However, Erewhon made benefit RdH from a good part of the technological advancements made by alliance during the first war.- Empire andermien starting from 1920 P.D.
- minor powers (Zanzibar, Alizon,…)
The RSM is in war with:
- Masada in 1903 P.D.
- the Popular republic of Harbor of 1905 P.D. with 1915 P.D. (truce)
- Republic of Harbor starting from 1919 P.D. (fine of truce with the Thunderbolt operation)
Because of its domination by Manpower Inc (the genetic organization of slavery), the RSM, more or less, was implied a long time in a cold war with:
- Mesa
The RSM is neutral towards:
The RSM decided (with the Empire andermien) in 1920 P.D. to annex and to divide the Silesian Confédération.
Localization
Its principal system is the system of Manticore, a binary star system.
Its principal systems and planets:
- principal system:
- Manticore has 3: Manticore is a planet moderated with a particularly soft climate; gravity is of 1G
- Manticore has 4: Sphinx be a cold planet with one year very long and of the very hard winters; the indigenous species include thewoodland ones (cognitive species); gravity is of 1,35G
- Manticore B 4: Gryphon is a cold planet with an axial slope superior with that of the Earth which causes extreme seasonal variations of climate; gravity slightly higher than 1G
- System of Basil: system connected to Manticore by the hole of worm
- Medusa is inhabited by an indigenous species cognitive (Medusans, sometimes called Stilties), which is in their Stone Age (or equivalent) at the time of their discovery.
During events told in the books, the RSM also annexes:
- most of the Silesian Confederation between the Empire andermien and the RSM.
- the system of the Star of Trévor (one of the termini of the junction of hole of worm of Manticore), located within the current limits of the Republic of Harbor.
- San Martin, the world with strongest gravity inhabited by human, the formerly independent one, then conquered and occupied by the Popular republic of Harbor. With asked and obtained its adhesion with the RSM after the release by Alliance.
- the Cluster of Talbott, a group of stars with several planets inhabited just beyond the current borders of the systems controlled by the League solarienne, but to a few hundred years lights of the system of Manticore. A system (Lynx) is very close to the sixth (and most recently discovered) terminus of the junction of hole of worm of Manticore. Like San-Martin, the planets of the Cluster, also required the annexation by the RSM. They regarded this as an alternative much more acceptable than incorporation in the Ligue solarienne as a mode of the Margin under control of the Security Office to the borders i.e. without having the rights of the members of the League.
According to the words of Honor Harrington, the RSM can ête now regarded as the stellar Empire of Manticore. This title seems well to stick if one projects oneself fifty years ahead; the Star of Trévor and the Amas of Talbott should be entirely on the level of infrastructure of Manticore in all the appreciable aspects. The quantity of tax resources and labor at this point would be significantly beyond the already considerable amounts which can be gathered in the system of Manticore itself.
Economy
Although at the origin colonized like a simple star-nation, the stellar Kingdom benefits from several advantages which the majority of the star-nation do not have:
- the system of Manticore comprises three planets (Manticore, sphinx, Gryphon). The majority of the star-nations have considerably less livable spaces. This involves obvious advantages in terms of possible development for the orbital infrastructure, and its impacts on the GNP of the system, like in capacity of population.
- the system of Manticore also contains the Trou of worm of Manticore. Discovered 100 years roughly after the stellar Kingdom was founded, it is the greatest junction of hole of worm never discovered. At the beginning alone five destinations were accessible via the junction.
- Sigma Draconis (located in the League solarienne, to only 19 years lights of the Ground, offers the fastest access to the system of Ground and planet of origin of humanity) includes/understands the planet Beowulf;
- Grégor (a double system located in the Empire andermien close to the Silesian Confederation, the planet nearest to the terminus of the hole of worm is an independent Republic),
- the Star of Trévor (system independent until the invasion by the Popular republic of Harbor, it was taken again by Alliance during the first war Harbor-Manticore),
- Phoenix (system of the Ligue solarienne),
- Basilic (which was annexed by Manticore).
- later in the Honorverse, a sixth terminus of junction was discovered in relation to the Amas of Talbott. This sector, formerly at the end of the space controlled by the human ones, is well placed for an explosive growth since it has an direct access with the other termini of the junction.
Mainly thanks to the toll and with the fees of use of the passage by the junction paid by the ships, the stellar Kingdom has a banking Net profit higher than that of a single system, apart from the Ligue solarienne.
It is this enormous economic advantage which made it possible Manticore to maintain its programs, strongly productive, of research and development, and to finance the budget of the royal Marine of Manticore.
This same economic advantage also lends itself to a strong diplomacy and foreign relations, with as threatens closing of the junction to the commercial fleet of a nation-star which would have like consequence a loss of competitiveness of this one vis-a-vis its competitors for the businesses of transport of the interstellar cargo.
In conclusion, there are obvious strategic military advantages with displacement via the military junction of fleet; and of vulnerabilities of the hostile forces using the junction to enter of force the system of Manticore.
Soldier
The principal branch of the soldiers of the Kingdom is the royal Marine of Manticore. The MRM is the principal service in terms of budget and need; the control of the system and the planetary orbits excluding from another military action in many circumstances. With a five hundred years tradition, the MRM piled up a considerable institutional experiment and desconnaissances, and during these years evolved/moved of its beginnings of force of the defense of system with fleets concentrating mainly on the protection of the trade and the merchant marine of Manticore.
The MRM is considered as a one of the marines of foreground of the galaxie.
Supported by the significant resources of Manticore, the MRM is helped even by programs, applied, searchs and for development. In particular since the beginning of the war with Havre, the MRM saw its possibilities of developing explosivement compared with what had been the point of technology before the beginning of the hostilities.
In terms of possibilities of combat, there are literally no comparison between the MRM of pre-war period and MRM during the war. Supercuirassé of pre-war period of the MRM can contain on a side only a few dozen tube-missiles with an optimal distance from launching of six million kilometers. Supercuirassé of the MRM developed at the time of the war can engage in an attack of missile, capsules containing as many missiles as it has checking circuits of firing (several hundreds) with an optimal distance from launching of one hundred fifty million kilometer.
The other military branches of Manticore are the royal marine Fusiliers of Manticore and the Royal army with Manticore. In fact professional terrestrial forces act in.liaison.with the MRM in the actions of security of planets, space stations, and ships enemy. Fusillers are in charge of the maintenance of safety, providing forces of fast reaction aboard ships of the MRM, and to carry out planetary attacks, while the army is charged to defend the surface of planets of the Kingdom, to reinforce the initial attacks conducted by the marine and the Fusiliers and to provide troops of garrison for occupied planets.
