Stellaland

The Stellaland was a republic Boer of 1882 with 1885, between the British Bechuanaland and the South Africa.

History

The republic was created on July 26th, 1882 by David Massouw and 400 colonists, under the control of Gerrit Jacobus van Niekerk (1849 - 1896). The town of Vryburg was founded and declared capital. According to the habit, Stellaland would draw its name from a comet visible in South Africa with the foundation of the state.

August 7th 1883, it was linked with the state of Goshen to form the “United States de Stellaland”.

In 1885, thanks to an armed force ordered by Sir Charles Warren, English puts an end to the republic on September 30th and integrate it into British Bechuanaland. During its existence, Stellaland adopted three different flags.

Philately

Stellaland emitted five values of postage stamp in February 1884. The impression is of bad quality and they have as a legend Republiek Stellaland . Because of short existence of Stellaland, the new specimens much more current than are obliterated.

In 1885, Twee ( two in Afrikaans) was superimposed on some stamps of four penny, this in order to divide by two their value of stamping. These specimens, extrèmement rare, are sold with the biddings several thousands of euros.
