Stele discoïdale

A stele discoïdale is a traditional monument of the cemeteries of the Basque Country.

It is made up of a circular stone disc which surmounts a base of trapezoidal form. The disc is decorated of a Basque Croix ( lauburu out of Basque, which means “with four heads”), of geometrical figures (solar symbols for example) or Symbole S Christian (IHS and Marie) but also of the commas and the vegetable symbols (trees). The name of late is seldom mentioned there but sometimes the surname there figure.
Oldest are former to the 16th siècle.
Concurrently to these steles discoïdales, one also finds in the Basque cemeteries of the tabular steles very old, at side, of course, of the more traditional crosses.
