Stefano Mei
Stefano Mei , born the February 3rd 1963 with Spezia, is old a Athlète Italy N, middle-distance runner.
With a gold medal, of money and bronze to the championships of Europe, Mei belonged to the Italian runners which dominated the continental scene in the the Eighties.
With the championships of the world of 1983 with Helsinki and with the Olympic Games of summer of 1984, Mei was eliminated in semi-final on 1.500 Mr. With the championships from Europe in room from 1986, it gained the money over 3.000 m behind the Autrichien Dietmar Millonig showing that it would also be necessary to take into account him on more long distances.
The finale of the 10.000 m of the championships of Europe of 1986 with Stuttgart proceeded as of the first day of the competition. The big favorite was its compatriot Alberto Cova who had gained all the large titles lately. The race proceeded with a rate/rhythm selected because the three Italians (Cova, Salvatore Antibo and Mei) were persuaded to be strongest in the final sprint and the other runners had much respect, at least, for Antibo and Cova. At the time of the sprint, as awaited, the three Italians were in front. Only the classification was surprising with Mei preceding Cova and Antibo.
All three were still qualified for the finale of the 5.000 m which will be coura five days later. The three British, Jack Buckner, Tim Hutchings and Steve Ovett were also qualified. Those had retained the lesson of strolls on 10.000 m and imposed a fast tempo that Ovett was first released. But Antibo and Cova could not follow either. Finally Buckner gained the title in front of Mei and Hutchings.
With the Olympic Games of summer of 1988, Mei finished seventh on 5.000 Mr. It took the same place on this distance to the championships of Europe of 1990. Over 10.000 m Antibo gained the title whereas Mei was satisfied with bronze behind the Norwegian Are Nakkim.
