Stefan George

Stefan George (*Bingen, Hesse, July 12, 1868 - Locarno, December 4, 1933) was a Poète and a German Traducteur.

The poetry of George is characterized by an aristocratic èthos distant and ; its worms is formal by the lyric by tonality and often mysterious style, by the language: it is indeed inspired by the Greek traditional forms, in reaction to the realistic tendency of the German literature of its time. Convinced that the goal of poetry is the distance to the world - he was a burning defender of art for art, and was influenced by Nietzsche - George can be attached by her writing to the movement Symbolist French.

George was an important bridge between the XIXe century and the German Modernism, though it was severe critical modern era. It tested, with various poetic meters, punctuation, allusions obscure and Typographie. The best poetic production of George is entitled Algabal ; the title is a reference to the Roman Emperor Elagabal. George was also an important translator; it translated Dante, Shakespeare and Baudelaire in German.

Georgekreis influenced Hugo von Hofmannsthal, one of the modernistic most important arts persons of Austria (which was to break later with George), like several members of the plot aiming at assassinating Hitler in July 1944, of which Claus von Stauffenberg.
