Will the American law always protect Steamboat Willy?
The film Steamboat Willie returned in the center of the attention of the public in 1998 during the promulgation of the American Loi of extension of the term of the royalties. The film was to fall into the Public domain in 2003 because of the arrival in the 75 years the term of protection after creation of a work in collective name of company. However the law pushed back the term of the 24 years expiry (already lengthened 25 years in 1976) to reach the 99 years. Many observers declared that this law, suggested and supported by Sony Bono (senator and ex-singer) until its death with the beginning of the year 1998, had passed not in homage to the man or because of an unspecified need but thanks to the lobbying of the Walt Disney Company which was likely to lose its symbol. It should despite everything be noted that the American congress inclua in the law of many points which make it possible to put the American law at the same level (or more) that international laws. It should be recalled that the United States is signatories of the Convention of Bern for the protection of literary works and artistic.
The new law makes it possible Mickey Mouse to be protected until 2023 whole at least in the United States just like the countries which last one comparable protection.
