Stayman
In the Jeu of Bridge convention Stayman is used not to make assemble the biddings.
It is used when a player opens of 1 SA . The partner can then use the bidding of 2 to know the presence of major fourth at the opener. The traditional answers to this convention are:
- 2 if the opener does not have a major fourth,
- 2 if it has four charts in heart,
- 2 if it has four charts with spade,
- 2 SA if it has four charts in the two major ones.
- 2 if it has four charts in heart,

The stayman three stages
Whereas usually the traditional stayman or 4 stages gets busy with hands including/understanding a major fourth and at least 8 points, the stayman three stages can get busy with hands of less than 8 points including/understanding at least a major fourth. It is used to find a contract with the color often higher than a contract with SA when one with the two hands is very weak and thus offer few increase apart from a possible color of asset.
The bidding of is always employed as stayman but only three answers are possible:
- 2 if the opener does not have a major fourth,
- 2 if it has four charts in heart with or without four charts with spade,
- 2 if it has four charts with spade without four charts in heart
- 2 if it has four charts in heart with or without four charts with spade,
The bidding of 2SA is not employed any more. Thus the guarantor provided with a weak hand will be able to pass on the answer of the opener.
The developments of this version of the stayman are rather similar to those of the traditional stayman, the opener which can deduce by inference the presence from 4 charts with spade at its partner when it has the two major fourth.
The stayman five stages
This version of the stayman is very close to the version to the traditional stayman or 4 stages . It is satisfied to add the distinction between a maximum or minimum hand of the opener when it holds the two major fourth.
Thus the 5 possible answers are:
- 2 if the opener does not have a major fourth,
- 2 if it has four charts in heart,
- 2 if it has four charts with spade,
- 2 SA if it has four charts in both major and that it is minimum of its opening ,
- 3 if it has four charts in both major and that it is maximum of its opening .
- 2 if it has four charts in heart,
This convention facilitates the developments for a slam when the opener holds two major of four charts.
