Stay

On a sailing ship, the stay ( 1 ) is a cable being used longitudinally to maintain the Mât forwards. The Stay ( 3 ) and the Galhauban S laterally maintain the mast, slightly backwards. The Preventer shroud ( 5 ) and the Bastaque S ( 8 ), if they exist, taking care of the maintenance on the back.

On certain sailing ships, there exists also a low-stay ( 6 ) possibly releasable.

On a boat comprising only one mast, it connects the Proue boat (its front point), either with the head of the mast (sailing with Gréement at the head), or with an intermediate height (Gréement split, Gréement 7/8e, etc).

The stay belongs to the Gréement sleeping, or standing Rigging.
