Stavkirke

A stavkirke is a medieval church in typical Bois of the Norway. The country counted of it more than one thousand in the past, but there remains about it today only twenty-eight. The majority were destroyed during the 19th century. The word stavkirke is formed of the words “pile” ( stav ) and “church” ( kirke ) in Norwegian, because of the large piles inserted in the ground and supporting the structure of the building. One calls them in French the “churches out of wooden upright”. Thereafter, one made put back these piles (or posts) on a threshold of large stones in order to free itself from the problems of moisture of the ground.

Some archaeological elements seem to indicate that the stavkirkes were built, preferably, on the old crowned sites of the Scandinavian populations , thus marking a continuity between the old pagan beliefs and the Christianisme, introduced in Norway about the year 1000.

At the architectural level , the majority of the stavkirkes carry out a very original combination between the Christian symbols most traditional and the reasons Vikings of the era pre-Christian woman, in particular the scenes of engagements between monsters of the Scandinavian Mythologie, often represented on the columns and the frontages.

There exist two principal types of churches out of wooden upright: with or without stage (standard has or B). Each category being again divided according to nature of their foundations, their plan, etc The walls were regularly tarred to preserve the sealing of wood.

Among the stavkirkes , oldest and most famous is that of Ballot boxes, which was registered with the world heritage of UNESCO in 1979. The '' stavkirke '' of Heddal, as for it, is largest, while that of Borgund, with Lærdal, is allowed as being best preserved.

The '' stavkirke '' of Fantoft as for it burnt in 1992 then was rebuilt in 1997. The '' stavkirke '' of Hopperstad is located close to Vik on the Sognefjorden.

Different in the style, the '' stavkirke '' of Torpo is located between Geilo, winter sports resort, and Gol in the area of Buskerud. It is also the case of the '' stavkirke '' of Ringebu located at 50 km in the north of Lillehammer in the valley of Gudbrandsdalen.
