Station-wagon dance
(Or it) the station-wagon dance , or breakdance, or station-wagon, or bboying, is a term used to indicate a style of dance developed with New York in the Années 1970 characterized by its lifting aspect and its figures on the ground. A dancer of station-wagon dance is called breaker , B-servant boy , or b-girl if it is about a woman.
History of the breakdance
Station-wagon dance and hip-hop
The history of the station-wagon starts in Bronx of the Années 1970 and is closely related to the destiny of a chief of gang, member of the Bronx River Projects, a fraction of the Black Spades. It will change orientation and will create, under the pseudonym of Afrika Bambaataa, the Bronx River Association, later famous Zulu Nation (in 1974). Pushed by its studies on the history of the Africa and its love for the music, he wants to catalyze the energy of young people of his district in artistic activities to prevent that they do not finish in gangs. Him the birth of a new movement is owed: the Hip-hop, whose 4 pillars are the Rap, the Graffiti, the DJing and the station-wagon dance). Afrika Bambaataa will also create one of the first groups of breakdance, the Zulu Kings. The influence of the DJ of origin jamaïcaine Kool Herc in the development of this culture Hip hop which is opposed to the culture violence which reigned then in these disadvantaged districts of the American metropolises is also to note.
Origins of the term station-wagon dance
Kool Herc, an immigrant jamaïcain, realizes that the energy of people on the track of dance reaches its paroxysm with certain passages of a song where only the base line and the line of battery are present. It thus decides to play these passages in loop. With this intention, it uses two record players ( Platine S ) and puts the same disc on two platinums. It passes thus from one disc to the other, repeating the same passage. This passage is called a station-wagon , or Breakbeat. As the first breakeurs attended much the evenings of Kool Herc, they were called the breakers or B-servant boys ( B for station-wagon), of the nickname having been given them by Kool Herc itself. By extension, one will use the term station-wagon dance.
Influences of the station-wagon dance
It is extremely difficult to precisely date a genesis from the station-wagon dance. At the end of the years 1970, New York is a cosmopolitan fish pond where each layer of immigration developed its style of dance. It probable that the most popular dances at the time were the Good foot and the Popcorn, is inspired by the songs Get One The Good Foot and Popcorn of James Brown. These dances consisted of a fast movement of legs, where the dancers pass from a foot of support on the other. One can note there a certain resemblance to certain movements of the swing, of the charleston of the Lindy hop or the Claquettes. This dance was undoubtedly to be also danced in the form of challenges. The fashion to defy itself would come from the surrounding atmosphere gangster , but also from the contests of talents, which are then very popular.
One can also think of the influence of the Locking which is then the most popular dance on the West coast of the United States, and of the Popping.
Good Foot then could give rise to the Upwork, where two people (or more) dance face to face by imitating a brawl. The rule of the dance stipulates that it is interdict of touching its adversary.
One does not know exactly what a day pushed the dancers to be descended on the ground after the execution from their movements from legs. The assumptions are numerous: the films of Kung-fu had a phenomenal success then and the Martial art Chinese includes positions on the ground enormously. Another martial art, the Capoeira, also very popular, is a fundamental source of the station-wagon dance. The traditional dances Cosaques also inspired the breakers. Indeed, certain Russo-Slavic dances rest on the same principles as the station-wagon: a fast execution of a movement of legs then execution of movements on the ground. One should not either forget the strong African immigration present in New York and the Latin immigration, which brought enormously to the station-wagon. One can see thus there an influence of the Salsa in the “footworks”.
It is also necessary to note the later influence of the Skate board which will result in Freez are very air (such as Y). Others say that it is the station-wagon dance which influenced the skateboard, since Y is already present in will capoeira.
The New Yorkean golden age (1977-1986)
In 1979, with groups like Zulu Kings or Nigger Twins, one can finally speak about station-wagon dance. The basic figures of ground are then:- the six-pas, six-time, or six steps
- the trois-pas, three times, or three steps
- freezes, such as the baby-flesh
- the back-spin
- the cupola
The station-wagon then will know a period of effervescence and creativity which will be equalized never again with groups like Rock Steady Crew, New York City Breakers and Dynamic Rockers. New movements, lifting, make their appearance:
- the gnawa
- the hand glide
- the crown
- the Thomas (named thus in homage to the gymnaste hmad omoussa], the inventor of the Pommel horse)
The age sinks of the station-wagon dance (1986-1991)
As from 1986, the hip-hop, and the station-wagon especially, become obsolete in New York, and, of the blow, undergo the same fate everywhere in Europe.
The revival and the station-wagon dance in Europe
The station-wagon dance very quickly will find an echo in Europe. The first official appearance of the station-wagon dance in France goes up with the round New York City Rap, organized by Europe 1 in 1982, turned in which the Rock Steady Crew is present. In France, the television program of Sidney, H.I.P.H.O.P. (1984), watch often of the dancers such as DJ Solo, the future DJ of the group Assassin. Danced into great majority by young people resulting from the difficult districts, the station-wagon will be transformed quickly into gold rush to be able to obtain contracts for televised appearances. In France, in 1984, is founded the company Aktuel Force. In spite of the dark age of the station-wagon dance, certain dancers, true impassioned, continue to practice this dance. The beginning of the year 1990 marks a revival of interest for the hip-hop. It is the Belgium which will represent the crossroads of Europe in 1990 with a championship of station-wagon dance. The breakers benefit from the favorable attentions that new dances come from the USA such as the Hype attract each other (which one can see danced in the clips of Bobby Brown or MC Hammer). A championship of hype is organized with Brussels, but will have to finally be cancelled because of confrontations between certain rival bands. A version underground of this tournament organizes in a spontaneous way then. The quality of dance which is present there will convince the participants of the European potential and the need for giving institutions to the station-wagon dance. Let us note especially the presence in Brussels of the French dancers Ibrahim and Gabin Nuissier of the group Aktuel Force, the German dancer Storm and the Belgian dancer Najim says also Power. One year afterwards, the Battle Of The Year is created in Germany. The station-wagon dance is of return in Europe.
Evolution
We are now well far from the time of the wars of gangs in Bronx, and the station-wagon dance moves away little by little from the hip-hop, is detached some by not required to join the current of the Punk - Rock. The style Evolve or Abstract style was created, it would seem, with the Texas and Las Vegas. It consists, for the dance, in jerked movements which one could connect with the Contemporary dance. For the technique, the movements are flexible, sometimes trash and suicidal, and redouble ingeniousness.
This style includes/understands Vegas B-servant boys who should not touch the ground with the feet at the time of a passage while raising themselves with the force of the arms and by having mutilations: to pose the foot on its hand.
Clothing changes and, contrary to the broad costumes hip-hop, the jeans are tightened and perforated, the hair pushes and is sometimes coloured…
This wave is not very visible yet in France and in the other countries, except in the United States where it becomes extensive.
The purpose of this evolution is to push back the limits always further and to reflect the new frame of mind of the breakeurs who do not come always from a hip-hop medium.
The crews representing this dance are (nonexhaustive list and certain members make basic station-wagon):
- Circus Bham (in the past Circus Runaway and Bham Tribe)
- Sour Patch
- Knuckle Head Zoo
- Freakshow
- Insane Prototyps (in the past Terror Bunch, Germany)
Principles of the breakdance
The station-wagon dance is a dance which is practiced in solo, in general in the middle of a circle (people laying out itself in circle, the dancer dancing in the middle of the circle). The dancers dance each one in their turn: they make passages . A passage proceeds in the following way:- the dancer advances in the middle of the circle and carries out fast movements of leg which point out those of the boxer Mohammed Ali. That is called toprock , or also dance of preparation, since it is indeed only the beginning of the passage, during which the dancer also warms up and made place to be able to have enough space to dance. The uprock, dance originating in Bronx in martial matter, can also be carried out in the place of the toprock.
- the breakor carries out figures called footwork , or passpass , i.e. while it has his hands on the ground, its legs run around its body.
- the dancer carries out figures on the ground (the phases) which propose either its speed of execution, or its physical force, or its creativity to connect in an original way several figures.
In general, each dancer belongs to a troop, usually called crew . Having been at the base developed in the difficult districts of Bronx, this dance preserved a spirit of gangs of it. Thus the crews often defy from/to each other: it is about battle . Both crews face then and make passages each one in their turn. The winner is chosen by the public, which generated interminable discussions because of the partiality of this method. Very quickly official battles, judged by dancer-referees were organized. Most known Battle off the Year remains international competition which is held in Germany every year.
Station-wagon dance and dances upright
There often were an amalgam between the station-wagon dance and other dances. When the press is interested in the station-wagon dance, with the beginning of the year 1980, she is unaware of that a true culture of the dance was always omnipresent in the United States. The press sees a spontaneous phenomenon and labellise there all the new dances under the single term of station-wagon dance.Among these dances which were comparable with the station-wagon dance, one can quote:
- the JB (imitation of James Brown, of which Good Foot and Popcorn)
- Funky Chicken (which will give the locking)
- Hustler
- Smurf
- the Locking (as developed by Don Campbell)
- the Popping
- the voguing
- the electric boogaloo
- the new style
- the waving
- the krump
These dances do not have any bond with the station-wagon dance. In fact, they all are to him former. They are very popular at the time of the beginnings of the station-wagon dance, therefore some B-servant boys include it in their routines.
For all those which are interested in these dances, the emission Soul Train is a true gold mine.

Basic movements
- the six-pas (six steps) : the six steps is one of the first movements on the invented ground. As its name indicates it, this movement consists of 6 pas having for principle of turning in a direction, or the other. The top of the body (head to the basin) does not move, one must always remain on the same line and remain of face. Certain breakeurs add to it even alternatives which according to the dancers and especially according to the style of each one, adds a characteristic and the identity of each breakor.
- the trois-pas (three steps) : the 3 steps is as the 6 steps but with 3 pas. Il is always necessary to return to the starting point.
- the cupola (windmill) : the cupola is a rotation movement on the shoulders, it is introduced into the group of “power move”. At each end of turn, the starting position is taken again: trax, arm positioned in right angles, a hand on the ground and the elbow on the stomach. The variation of the legs as well as speed are two big factors for the cupola. There exist various cupolas:
- Coupole swell (or “cupola baby”): the starting position is not taken again. At each end of turn, the dancer carries out a gimlet (360°) without the hands. Once the departure carried out, the dancer is on the shoulders. From there, it gives an impulse with the legs, which will help it to turn on him to even find itself again on the shoulders, and so on. The legs carry out an inflection - extension for a better impulse. The position of the legs and speed are very important for this cupola.
- ventral Cupola: This cupola is carried out the arms in prolongation with the body. Once the departure, the dancer is on the shoulders. From there, it passes on the belly by going up the head as well as the legs and makes use of the supports generated by its arms to connect rotation. In a general way, the cupola is always in rotation.
- the 90 (ninety) : normally called ninety nine , it is the fact of turning in balance on a hand. The experiment and the practice allow the sequence of several turns. A derivative of this movement is the sixtine , figure consisting in turning on a hand like the ninety but while leaving on its 1e hand support and not on 2nd concerning the ground, like the ninety . With experiment, it is possible to produce one or more turns in sixtine , then in ninety , and finally to finish by connecting the whole with one or more gimlets. Very many spectacular alternatives are offered to the tested B-servant boys and fly-girls.
