States of Malaysia
The Malaysia is a federation of 13 States ( negeri-negeri , singular: negeri ) and three federal territories ( wilayah persekutuan ).
List
Malayan peninsula
Eleven of the thirteen States and two of the three territories are located on the Malayan Péninsule (in the following list, the capitals are given between brackets):-
States:
- Sultanate of Johor (Johor Bahru)

- Sultanate of Kelantan (Kota Bharu)
- Sultanate of Pahang (Kuantan)
- Sultanate of Perak (Ipoh)

Borneo
Two of the thirteen State and one of the three territories are located on the island of Borneo (in the following list, the capitals are given between brackets):-

Leaders
Last nines of the States have a hereditary leader as Head of State and a Prime Minister - or Menteri Besar - elected official as chief of the government. The Heads of State of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Selangor and Terengganu are Sultan S (generally Moslem). The elected monarch of Negeri Sembilan carries the Malayan title of Yang di-Pertuan Besar ; that of Perlis the title of Rajah . The federal King (titrated Yang di-Pertuan Agong ) is elected among these new leaders for a 5 years mandate (in practice, the leaders of the various States are chosen by rotation).The old establishments and British colonies of the crown of Penang, Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak have each one a governor, elected by the federation (and titrated Yang di-Pertua Negeri ), and a Prime Minister.

History
Singapore was a Malayan State since the formation of the federation on September 16th, 1963 until August 9th, 1965, date on which Singapore made secession.The Brunei was invited to join the federation at the same time as Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak, but rejected the offer and is remained a British protectorate until its independence in 1984.
