States and territories of India

The India is a federation, subdivided in 28 States and 7 territories.

History

The Indian sub-continent was directed by many different governments throughout its history, each one imposing its own administrative subdivisions. Divisions of modern India are recent creations, which started to develop during the English domination. For this period, the Indian areas were directed directly by the British or under the control of Râja S. the independence of the sub-continent in 1947 preserved these divisions mainly, except for zones like the Penjab, which was divided between India and the Pakistan.

After independence, the country knew an increasing instability. Many the States had been created without taking account of the ethnic diversity met in the sub-continent. Ethnic tensions pushed the Indian Parliament to reorganize the following country of the ethnic criteria and linguistics in 1956.

The French and Portuguese colonies were incorporated in the Indian republic like territories of Pondichéry, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Goa, Daman and Diu in 1962.

Since 1956, several new States and territories were created starting from States preexistent. The State of Bombay was shared on May 1st, 1960 between the Gujarat and the Maharashtra according to linguistic criteria. In 1966, the Penjab was divided according to linguistic and religious lines, creating the State mainly Hindu of the Haryana, transferring the districts from north to the Himachal Pradesh and making Chandigarh, the divided capital of Punjâb and Haryana, a territory. The Nagaland becomes a State in 1962, the Meghalaya and the Himachal Pradesh in 1971, the Tripura and Manipur in 1972. The Arunachal Pradesh became a territory in 1972. The kingdom of the Sikkim was annexed as a State in 1975. The Mizoram became a State in 1986 and Goa and Arunachal Pradesh in 1987, while the Daman and Diu, enclaves of Goa in north, became a separate territory. In 2000, three new States were created: the Jharkhand starting from the southern districts of the Bihar, Chhattisgarh starting from the east of the Madhya Pradesh and the Uttarakhand starting from the North-West of the Uttar Pradesh. The territories of Delhi and Pondichéry received the right to elect their own legislature and are on the way to become States with whole share.
